That Plant Life!!

So I thought I would share an actual story or plan I guess. Im not exactly sure what kind of post this is. Blogging is fairly new to me so here it is, Im writing this post on my first year gardening and now. So last year right around this same time of year (feb) I decided to start a backyard garden. My friends husband makes tabletop gardens so I bought two, both different sizes. I also had a box garden on the ground from the previous owners and a big metal tin I thought Id use as well. So went to Lowes and got a bunch of seeds I wanted to plant: watermelon, pumpkins, cucumber, tomato, carrots, lettuce, peas, dill, mint and cilantro. Got some soil and plant food and off I went. I did very little research and did not invest a lot of time or energy to them, I was lazy and didnt care for them like I should have. My pumpkins did very well but I stupidly put them in the metal tin which did not provide enough space for them, nor a place for the vine to crawl. So when I tried to move them to a better space, I killed them.... So I tried again and then my dogs killed them... So basically it was a giant failure.

Now because of my failure this is what I have learned and plan to do differently this year. Now please keep in mind the weather here allows for early gardens so wherever you are pay attention to that. So a few things I didnt do, water properly, pulling weeds and proper seed placement. I also did not paint our garden boxes and found out they were not protected from weather. Amazingly enough they were still in great shape so that was the first thing I did this year, I bought some barn red wood finish and painted both of my boxes. I also started my seeds inside this year instead of starting them outside and waited until they were fit to be replanted. So far thats only been the beans still Im still waiting on the cucamelons to grow a little more before I transfer them and then I will start the brussels sprouts and corn inside and the pumpkins and watermelon outside.

It’s has been almost a month since I first started growing my veggies and so far everyone is doing great, the beans took the transfer well and are thriving and I think the cucamelons will be able to go out in another week or so. Now I am being a little extra motherly with them because they are not a common veggie and I had to order them on etsy. I only got 10 seeds and so far. It seems as if only 6 will be going into the garden. So I just want to make sure they are good and ready before I make the transfer.

This morning I started the pumpkins and watermelons outside, I found the trellis I was looking for last year and they were only 2$ a piece ((score)). I still have the fencing I tried to use last time but I’m going to use it in hopes to keep the dogs and chickens out!! I also added a orange pepper plant and a jalapeno plant to the planter with the beans. We also started backyard cleanup so I’m so excited to get that underway. It will be hot here before we know it and outside projects get difficult because of the heat so I want it to get done. Well I guess thats it for now, once this is posted Ill put all my progress pictures up on my IG in my grow with me tab so look for updates there :)

As always thanks for reading!!

XOXO Nikki
